Black is the New Black

I'm a consumer of black. When buying anything -
shoes, bags, organizers, pants - my first impulse is
to get it in black. This summer I tried to break out
of the blackness. With so many vibrant colors in
vogue this season, I thought I should seize the day
and bring a little of it into my life. I needed a new
purse and I decided it was going to be silvery-white!
So trendy! So fun! My friend decided to purchase the
same purse in black. At the time I scoffed at her
boring stereotypical ways. I, on the other hand, was
moving with the times and was no longer afraid of
color!!

We've had our bags for 3 months now. My silvery-white
bag is no longer silvery-white. It is gray and grimy
and dirty looking, and as it turns out - I don't have
time to polish it every day! I'm always worried about
where I will put it when out at dinner or having
drinks because I don't want to get it MORE dirty. My
friend's black bag, however, looks great. Looks like
she bought it yesterday. She throws it around and
puts it down wherever she feels like it- unlike me who
clings to my grimy-grey bag in fear. I find myself
glancing longingly at her black bag constantly. Sure
it felt good to challenge the black cliche, but
ultimately it was unsuccessful. Turns out there's a
reason, in this city especially, they're always out of
black.

Blackness isn’t bought, it’s earned. Just because you can buy a black belt at a McDojo doesn’t mean you can kick anyone’s ass. Even Darth Vader started off wearing white. Go ahead and use the bag, spill some red deaths, blue hurricanes and pink cosmos on it. Let it rest on the floor in every bar listed in Shecky’s guide. After your virginal white bag has passed through each color and has become blacker than a corporate lawyer’s shriveled heart, then you’ll know, like the wizened kung fu sensei, that you are truly the master.
